Trump's FDA chief resigns as admin pushes forward on drug pricing plan

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, who oversaw federal efforts to tackle abuse of opioids and reverse an explosion in teen vaping, resigned Tuesday, depriving President Trump of a steady hand in a Cabinet that has seen plenty of upheaval.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar praised Gottleib in a statement Tuesday.

"I will not allow a generation of children to become addicted to nicotine through e-cigarettes", Gottlieb said in November.

"Scott's leadership inspired historic results from the FDA team, which delivered record approvals of both innovative treatments and affordable generic drugs, while advancing important policies to confront opioid addiction, tobacco and youth e-cigarette use, chronic disease, and more", Azar said in the statement.

The FDA also introduced stricter age-verification requirements for online sales of e-cigarettes.

Rumors have swirled in recent months that Gottlieb would resign amid the White House's ongoing efforts to reign in high drug costs.

Gottlieb, 46, a conservative and former physician, was deputy FDA commissioner under Republican President George W. Bush.

Tobacco in particular had a tough time, as investors anxious about the implications of his initiatives to lower the nicotine content in cigarettes and contain the epidemic of young people vaping, such as calling for an end to flavoring, including menthol, in tobacco products. Before becoming head of the FDA, he was a longtime healthcare investor and consultant who sat on multiple company boards.

Moving forward. While Gottlieb's plans for the FDA are officially still in place, the advancement and enforcement of his initiatives will rest with the agency's next chief, and there's no guarantee his replacement will pursue them. These goals included bringing down drug prices through increased competition and a robust biosimilars market.

Following news of Gottlieb's resignation, the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index turned negative. Within the Trump administration, he stood out for being vocal and aggressive in his actions to regulate several industries, most notably his efforts on curbing vaping and making generic drugs more accessible. "We've got a lot of important policy we'll advance this year", he wrote in the January tweet. Amgen shares finished down 0.5 percent and Gilead shares closed 1.6 percent lower.
