McSally: 'I felt the system was raping me all over again'

The Arizona Republican was testifying to a hearing on the armed services' efforts to prevent sexual assaults.

Martha McSally said she was raped while she was a pilot in The Air Force during a Wednesday meeting on Capitol Hill.

Senator McSally said: "I stayed silent for many years, but later in my career, as the military grappled with the scandals, and their wholly inadequate responses, I felt the need to let some people know, I too was a survivor". "Like so many women and men, I didn't trust the system at the time. I thought I was strong but felt powerless".

"The perpetrators use their positions of power in profound ways". She was in the ninth class at the Air Force Academy to allow women, and said sexual harassment and assault were prevalent. I nearly separated from the Air Force at 18 years of service over my despair.

Pentagon officials were concerned about the significant increase, as well as the fact that the number of incidents reported directly to authorities remained relatively unchanged.

McSally was appointed to the U.S. Senate in December as a permanent replacement for Sen.

"We must allow them to live up to the moral responsibilities that come with being a commander", she said.

"We've come a long way to stop military sexual assault but we have a long way to go", McSally said.

"I was preyed upon and raped by a superior officer", McSally told the hearing in her opening statement.

"Even though he didn't physically force me, it certainly was an emotional manipulation", McSally was quoted in the story as saying.

According to a Pentagon report released last April, 5,277 service members said they had been sexually assaulted in 2017, an increase of almost 10 percent over the previous year.

"I'm deeply affected by that testimony", said Sen.
