Gun Control Advocate Criticizes NH Republicans Who Wore Pearls During Hearing

Male Republican politicians in the New Hampshire House of Representatives have denied they were wearing pearl necklaces during a committee hearing to mock gun control advocates, after accusations to that effect were widely shared on social media.

State conservatives, however, say the lawmakers were supporting women's rights to arm themselves for defense.

However, as local media reports, the pearls are a long-time facet of the Women's Defense League of New Hampshire, a Granite State group that supports the Second Amendment and gun law reform.

Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, tweeted out photos of the hearing.

On Tuesday, the Committee for Criminal Justice and Public Safety heard testimony from those affected by gun violence, while considering a bill that will make it easier for families and law enforcement officers to restrict gun access to people they consider a danger to themselves and public safety. She snapped photos of the lawmakers and posted them on Twitter, where she has almost 300,000 followers, sparking outrage near and far.

Speaking with the Post, she said, "When you are a male lawmaker and you come to a hearing wearing a pearl necklace and a semiautomatic rifle pin, you sort of lose control of the narrative".

Morin was more emphatic on Twitter, replying directly to Watts and another user: "These legislators are wearing pearls to SUPPORT the Women's Defense League who support ACTUAL women's rights".

"Moms who want to keep their kids safe from gun violence don't deserve this", wrote Mr Booker. They are the farthest thing from sexist and there was a women lawmaker wearing them, too. None of the three responded to requests for comment. Morin said after pearls were worn several years ago, members of Moms Demand complained they felt intimidated; nonetheless, the Women's Defense League has continued to pass out the pearls.

Watts said she was unaware the group has used white pearls as a symbol but was steadfast in her belief that they were offensive. "They gave them out to a whole bunch of us", he said.

She added, "This is not respectful or appropriate behavior". "So we've been wearing pearls in defense of women's rights and the Women's Defense League since then, because we are moms just like they are only on different sides".

WDL members wear pearls both at legislative hearings and in meetings with lawmakers.

Watts said Morin is a "gun extremist" who has a history of feuds with Moms Demand Action and its New Hampshire chapter.

Another New Hampshire representative on the committee, Dennis Fields, told CNN he was handed the beads and wore them without knowing the meaning behind them, assuming they were to celebrate Mardi Gras.

When a group of Republican lawmakers wore fake pearls in solidarity with a pro-gun women's group, opponents ran with it.
