British Man Becomes Second Person Ever To Be Cleared Of HIV

"By achieving remission in a second patient using a similar approach, we have shown that the Berlin Patient was not an anomaly, and that it really was the treatment approaches that eliminated HIV in these two people", said Professor Gupta. In September 2017, 16 months after the stem cell transplant, the "London patient" went off antiretroviral drugs and has remained HIV-free.

"With regular testing, condoms, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and the fact that people on effective HIV treatment can not pass on the virus, we have the ability to completely prevent new HIV transmissions".

The London patient, whose case is set to be presented at a medical conference in Seattle on Tuesday, has asked his medical team not to reveal his name, age, nationality or other details.

Gupta added that the method used is not appropriate for all patients but offers hope for new treatment strategies, including gene therapies.

A United Kingdom patient's HIV has become "undetectable" following a stem cell transplant - in only the second case of its kind, doctors report in Nature.

Anton Pozniak, president of the International AIDS Society (IAS) said the announcement "reaffirms our belief that there exists a proof of concept that HIV is curable".

"The London Patient", as he is known, had a form of blood cancer that was not responding to chemotherapy and underwent a bone marrow transplant which required a replenishment of white blood cells via stem cells.

London man becomes second in world to be cured of HIV

"Until then, the emphasis needs to remain on prompt diagnosis of HIV and initiation of life-long combination antiretroviral therapy", Freedman said in a statement. In both cases, the men had cancer, and were treated with bone marrow from a donor with the CCR5 mutation; CCR5 is a protein that HIV uses to enter certain immune cells.

The doctors selected a donor who had two copies of a particular mutation in the CCR5 gene that prevents HIV from infecting T-cells, a part of the immune system where the virus takes hold and does its damage. The new patient had none of this HIV variant, which probably contributed to the success of this treatment. The team also found that his white blood cells now can not be infected with CCR5-dependent HIV strains, indicating the donor's cells had engrafted. "I don't think doing wide-scale bone marrow transplantation is on anyone's radar as a future option". The first, the Berlin Patient, also received a stem cell transplant from a donor with two of the CCR5 alleles, but to treat leukaemia.

Doctors say they'll need to keep monitoring the London patient to see how his condition develops from here, and point out that this treatment would not necessarily work with all patients - not to mention that the donated stem cells used in this case are very rare, owing to the specific CCR5 mutation involved.

The "London Patient" is only the second person known to have shaken off the HIV virus during a 40-year AIDS epidemic that has infected 70 million people and killed half of them.

The case report, led by researchers at UCL and Imperial College London, comes around a decade after the first known case in Berlin.

Brown, apart from being HIV-positive, had leukemia and had bone marrow transplant after chemotherapy proved futile.
