Wales Weather: Storm Freya brings severe gales and heavy rain

The rain will turn to sleet and snow in places as the day goes on with the winds becoming northeasterly in direction and temperatures dropping to between 1 and 5 degrees.

Snow was not forecasted until Sunday morning when a Status Yellow warning was issued.

They have also warned of danger caused by flying debris and damage to buildings and trees. "It'll be especially unsafe near coastal areas due to the wind whipping up large waves".

"The centre of the storm, named Freya by the Met Office, will move from North Wales to northern England, and out to the North Sea overnight".

This beat the previous record of 9.8C which was set in 1998.

"Monday night to Tuesday will be mostly dry, with the odd shower around, and temperatures of 11-12C", he said.

Temperatures will rise to highs of 6 to 8 degrees with good spells of sunshine.

But Storm Freya's arrival will bring a much less spring-like start to March.

"The strongest winds will be limited to parts of western England and Wales, but the warning area includes parts of the Midlands and over towards Yorkshire and Lincolnshire as well".

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: "What we have got is a storm developing quite rapidly to the south and west of the UK".

"South-westerly winds will strengthen through Sunday afternoon, with gusts of 55-65 miles per hour expected widely across England, Wales and southern Scotland".

"It will be developing as it goes across the United Kingdom and it will be bringing very strong winds".

Snowfall has affected routes around Tipperary, Kilkenny, Offaly, Laois, Kildare, Westmeath and Meath and Gardai are advising people to avoid travelling on routes in these areas, due to treacherous conditions and multiple incidents.
