Lutterworth MP resigns from Government over Brexit ammendment

He will continue to sit as a Tory MP.

Lawmakers showed overwhelming support for the proposal, approving by 520 votes to 20 an amendment tabled by Labour former minister Yvette Cooper seeking to bind May to the timeframe.

Alberto Costa, the Conservative MP for South Leicestershire, has been forced out of his job in the Government as parliamentary private secretary to the Scotland secretary, David Mundell.

Downing Street said on Thursday that, following Parliament's approval of the Costa amendment, the United Kingdom would "speak to the Commission to seek clarification of the EU's position on ring-fencing the citizens' rights section of the Withdrawal Agreement".

"Rarely has any amendment or clause on anything gained as much cross-party support as this one did, right from the Greens to the DUP to Labour, moderate Tory and ERG to boot".

But he admitted he had not heard May's comments in the House of Commons on Tuesday when she claimed it would have no chance of success in Brussels.

The EU has so far deemed the rights of citizens in the even of a no deal Brexit to be an issue for individual member states to decide.

When asked by an MP on the home affairs select committee what was wrong with the Costa amendment, Javid replied: "Nothing".

The SNP MP Stuart McDonald asked for clarity: "So is the government supporting that now?"

United Nations children's Fund warns of rise in measles cases
Full vaccination is 97 percent effective at preventing measles. "That is why we are a little concerned that we might see it here". There were 372 cases in all of past year . "Just being in a room where someone recently had measles can transmit the infection".

The Commission welcomed the UK's indication of its intention to preserve European Union nationals' rights if no deal is concluded and "expects the assurance to be formalised soon so that citizens can rely on it", she said.

She said: "The sacking of Alberto Costa for supporting citizens' rights prolongs the anxiety and uncertainty that over 5 million people have faced for two and a half years". It has been supported by opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn as well as Brexiteer and ERG leader Jacob Rees-Mogg.

The amendment has been selected by speaker John Bercow to be voted on in the Commons on Wednesday night.

Speaking earlier this week, the Minister David Lidington said the European Union has made it clear it would not allow the citizens' rights part of the withdrawal agreement to stand on its own, but he would take the issue to Brussels and see if their stance can be changed.

"What Mr Costa is doing, which I think is perfectly correct, is trying to find more ways for Parliament to give that reassurance".

"This is a backbench amendment and the government supports the amendment in that it sets out to achieve the principles we all agree on".

Confirmation of May's position also followed a freakish incident earlier in the day involving Home Secretary Sajid Javid.

It would also re-categorise them in a no-deal scenario as a cohort of the population who did not have rights if they did not have a settled status ID.
