African News: DRC Ebola Centre Attacked By Armed Assailants

Medical facilities treating Ebola victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo are upgrading security following attacks this week that forced patient evacuations and the closure of two treatment centers, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) said in a press release on Thursday.

The identity and motive of the assailants were unclear.

"Such attacks are deplorable for their immediate impact on lives and for the risk of spreading the disease further", the agency, a public health armed of the United Nations, said in a statement.

"Four patients confirmed to have the deadly virus who fled during the attack are still missing, " the ministry said, as well as others who were suspected of being infected.

The attack in the city of Butembo was the second in Congo's Ebola-hit east this week.

Doctors Without Borders, which runs the treatment centre, says it is focusing on the safety of staff and patients.

A similar incident took place last Sunday against another treatment centre, recalled the news website Actualite.

Health workers in eastern Congo have struggled to win the trust of residents amid attacks by armed groups vying for control of the mineral-rich region.

The Ebola outbreak declared in August is the second-largest in terms of cases and deaths behind the one in West Africa that killed more than 11,300 people during 2014-2016.
