United Nations children's Fund warns of rise in measles cases

In Ukraine, there were 35,120 cases of measles in 2018, up from 4,782 in 2017. One case was acquired from the United Kingdom and one from Ukraine.

The California state Legislature made that decision in 2015, less than a year after the state experienced a significant measles outbreak that got its first foothold among unvaccinated children visiting Disneyland.

"The reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite the availability of vaccines - threatens to reverse progress made in tackling vaccine-preventable diseases", the World Health Organization said in its report.

Just ten countries were responsible for three-quarters of a global surge in measles cases previous year, the UN children's agency said Friday, including one of the world's wealthiest nations, France.

The outbreak now in the Philippines has been blamed on controversy that broke over a dengue fever vaccine as potential side effects to the shot were not properly advertised creating mistrust among the public against all vaccines. Those cases were thought to be connected to the outbreak in southwest Washington, however. Complications and fatalities are rare but do happen. "So we would actually be at closer to what would be the tail end of this outbreak", he said.

The government in the Philippines is conducting a campaign with UNICEF's support to vaccinate nine million children across 17 regions, and a social media campaign has been launched to convince parents.

"Vaccinating children is one of the most basic ways a parent can protect their child's health", said Councilman Chaim Deutsch (Brighton Beach, Marine Park, Midwood). Centers for Disease Control officials recommend getting vaccinated or checked before travelling overseas. "I thank the Health Department for their efforts to do outreach and spread the word to ensure NY families are protected". California ended a similar exemption in 2015 after a measles outbreak at Disneyland sickened 147 people and spread across the US and into Canada. Full vaccination is 97 percent effective at preventing measles. "That is why we are a little concerned that we might see it here". Having a child with a suppressed immune system is one, but "clearly there are no reports that there is a growing epidemic of children with suppressed immune systems", she said. It is equally imperative to understand that prevention is key. There were 372 cases in all of past year. "Just being in a room where someone recently had measles can transmit the infection".

Measles symptoms include a fever, rash, cough, conjunctivitis (red watery eyes) or a runny nose. The rash usually starts on the face and proceeds down the body. "The coughing can last for about 10 days". Because while many people who get measles do recover fully, some don't.
