Cyclone Oma heads to Queensland; to affect New South Wales as well

"Two and a half, three days ago a lot of our computer models were suggesting that it was going to get quite close to the coast or even cross the coast, which would have been a pretty bad scenario for us in southern Queensland, but we have steadily moved away from that".

"We are starting to see the main swell packet from Oma starting to arrive on the south coast of Queensland now", Hall told the ABC.

A flawless storm bringing king tides and massive swells could hit the region with its fiercest battering in years.

As a result of the cyclone, abnormally high tides are expected along the southern Queensland coast, in addition to strong winds and increased swell.

Water Police Senior Sergeant David Edden said people should avoid any type of boating and water activities in affected areas.

"When we're going out in these conditions ourselves we're putting our lifesavers and lifeguards at risk and that's not ideal", Jacob Thomson, from Surf Lifesaving Queensland, said. Seas and swell are already increasing well ahead of the approach of Oma with unsafe surf about the east coast extending from far northern New South Wales northwards to Seventeen Seventy, just north of Bundaberg.

The swell was picking up at Alexandra Headland and The Bluff on the Sunshine Coast.

A Gold Coast wave monitoring buoy recorded a maximum nine-metre wave about lunch time on Saturday.

"The cyclone could turn north and along the coast and there is the possibility of showers for the Biloela region", Ms Ford said.

Fuel loads in the Springbrook area are high following dry conditions over the past months, he said.

Tropical Cyclone Oma is now Category 1.

"It will be parallel from the coast and will keep those large swell conditions continuing into next week", Ms Ford said.

Authorities are warning people not to panic but prepare, with the cyclone expected to bring wild weather, 130km/h winds and 500mm of rain in just 24 hours.

"Due to the uncertainty in the future movement, the indicated winds will nearly certainly extend to regions outside the rings on this map", it said.
