Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro closes Brazil border to block aid entry

Venezuela's deputy United Nations military attache, Col. Pedro Chirinos, said in a video on social media that he recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country's interim president, increasing pressure on President Nicolas Maduro.

The opposition plans to send aid into Venezuela on Saturday from collection points in neighboring countries including Colombia via sea and land, despite Maduro's refusal to let it in, setting up a possible clash with authorities.

"We know that the regime is going to put all obstacles to prevent us from reaching the border, but nothing is stopping us, we are going to continue", said opposition politician Yanet Fermin.

Food Minister Luis Medina Ramirez said on Twitter that 20,600 boxes of food from the government's long-running subsidised food distribution programme left for the Colombian border area from the port of La Guaira.

"Through this call for humanitarian aid, the population will benefit from the arrival of these goods to the Venezuelan border", opposition legislator Edgar Zambrano said as he waited to board a bus in a plaza of eastern Caracas.

The vice president, who has been one of the leading spokespersons for the Trump administration's crackdown on Maduro's increasingly-authoritarian government, is also scheduled to speak before representatives of nations in the "Lima group", a coalition formed by Latin American governments to address the dire humanitarian and political turmoil in Venezuela.

Branson also responded to comments made on Tuesday by Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters, who criticized the concert as a USA -backed effort to tarnish Maduro's socialist government, saying there was "no mayhem, no murder, no apparent dictatorship" in Venezuela.
