Florida boy, 11, arrested after refusing to recite ‘racist’ Pledge of Allegiance

The student was charged with disruption of a school facility and resisting an officer without violence.

The boy later told Bay News 9 that he never made threats against the teacher.

"I'm upset", Talbot told Bay News 9. "I'm hurt", she said. "He shouldn't have been arrested".

The youngster, who has not been named, was kicked out of the classroom at Lawton Chiles Academy in Lakeland, Florida, after reportedly telling a substitute teacher that the Stars and Stripes flag was racist, and that the USA national anthem was offensive to black people.

According to a handwritten statement from the substitute teacher, she asked the boy why he didn't find somewhere else to live, and the boy replied, "they brought me here".

She then told him he can "always go back", according to the statement, and went on to tell the student that she was from Cuba and would leave the US if she ever felt unwelcome. The child was suspended for three days following the February 4 incident. I feel like this should've been handled differently.

"The student was arrested after becoming disruptive and refusing to follow repeated instructions by school staff and law enforcement", the statement reads.

After this point, the student was arrested by the school's resource officer. "Africa?' She said, 'Yeah'".

'If she felt like there was an issue with my son not standing for the flag, she should've resolved that in a way different manner than she did'.

An 11-year-old boy was arrested following a confrontation at school over his refusal to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, which he reportedly called racist against black people.

"To be clear, students are not required to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance", Kyle Kennedy, from Polk County Public Schools, told the Patch.

But the substitute teacher, whom district officials identified as Ana Alvarez, was not aware that the school does not require students to recite the pledge, the Ledger reported.

The boy's mother, Dhakira Talbot, has meanwhile spoken out against the teacher's behavior and has insisted that the charges against him be dropped.

There are multiple reports circulating on social media about the student refusing to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance.

When the student became agitated, according to police, the school's resource officer and dean of students came to the classroom and attempted to calm him down after he created a disturbance.

The Feb. 4 incident started when a substitute teacher asked the boy to stand up for the pledge.

For right now, the school district says, the substitute teacher "ill no longer be able to work at any of the district's schools and the district is still looking into the matter". Kennedy told 10 News that the district is reviewing the training policy for substitute teachers with the company that provides them to the schools.
