Russian region declares state of emergency after mass invasion of polar bears

Polar bears are moving into an Arctic town and terrorizing people into staying in their homes.

The move came after officials in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, with a population of about 3,000 people, appealed for help.

The Novaya Zemlya archipelago in the Arctic Ocean has seen more than fifty polar bears come into settlements searching for food since December past year. The International Union for Conservation of Nature estimates that there are now somewhere between 22,000 and 31,000 polar bears worldwide.

The local administration declared a state of emergency on Saturday, warning that the bears were behaving aggressively and that people were afraid to leave their homes.

Musin's deputy Alexander Minayev said people were scared and afraid of leaving their homes. "Parents are unwilling to let their children go to school or kindergarten". In one video, a man can be seen walking calmly past a bear foraging for food. "Can peek without invitation!"

But a garbage-based diet won't properly nourish polar bears, whose energy demands require "high-fat prey", as detailed in a 2014 paper in the journal Science.

Now, the bears could be selectively slaughtered if Russian authorities can't figure out another way to keep them from menacing the residents of the remote island outpost, where they began to collect in December 2018.

Russian state media reported that the usual methods of scaring the bears away using police sirens, vehicle horns and dogs are no longer effective, because the animals have become so used to them.

The Federal Service for Supervision of Nature Management refused to grant permission to kill the beasts.

"The decision to declare an emergency situation on the territory of Novaya Zemlya from February 9 was taken at a meeting of the commission tasked to prevent emergencies and ensure fire safety", the TASS news agency quoted a statement by the Archangelsk governor and regional government as saying. The town had a population of about 2000 as of the 2010 Census.

Scientists in Russian Federation said thinning sea ice could be an explanation for the invasion.

"I've been on Novaya Zemlya since 1983", he added. Along their migration route, the animals encountered the open dump at Belushya Guba, where the military apparently had disregarded strict rules on garbage disposal imposed on oil and mining companies and others working in the Russian far north.
