Newspaper carrier finds newborn baby in middle of Central California road

Authorities are trying to identify the person who abandoned the infant.

The California Highway Patrol's Alfred Medina holds the infant girl who was found in the town of Madera Ranchos.

Fuentes described the "awful, chilling, moment" he was approaching a customer's house in his auto and saw something white moving in the road, which he initially thought was an animal.

A newspaper delivery man has described the "awful" moment he found an hours-old baby with its umbilical cord still attached in the middle of a California road in the early hours of Monday morning.

California Highway Patrol officers received a call about the baby at 3.58 a.m. after a newspaper carrier found her lying on the road at Avenue 13 1/3 west of Road 36.

"I approached slowly. Next thing you know I see it's red, you can see the face. There could've been coyotes, there's cars going by fast down that road", Mr Fuentes said.

The young baby was rushed to hospital, where she remains in intensive care.

Trump Supporters Form Human ‘Wall’ Along U.S.-Mexico Border
This will be the seventh rally President Trump has held in Texas, and the first rally he's ever held in El Paso . But on Monday O'Rourke downplayed the impact his speech would have on a potential presidential campaign.

It is believed the newspaper carrier arrived a few minutes later to discover the dumped baby on the road.

The baby was taken to the nearest hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. He refused, and pointed her toward a nearby hospital and fire station.

Authorities are seeking the mother.

Investigators are looking for a Hispanic female, likely in her early 20s, who left the scene in a small white SUV.

She was said to have been driving a white SUV but details of her physical description are "unknown".

California has a Safe Surrender law allowing newborns to be dropped off at several locations anonymously within three days of their births. "This female got out of her vehicle, asked the man if he could help her and asked him to take her child", Madera County Undersheriff Tyson Pogue told reporters Monday.
