England World Cup Winner Gordon Banks Dies Aged 81

"Rest In Peace Gordon and thanks for the memories", another said.

No cause of death was given.

He helped England win the World Cup in 1966 - and his twisting, diving save against Brazilian footballer Pele was one of the greatest feats of goalkeeping.

Banks is famously known for his outstanding save from Pele during England's quarter final match with Brazil in 1970.

Banks is the fourth member of the starting lineup to die, following captain Bobby Moore, Alan Ball and Ray Wilson.

Stoke City also shared the news and included a statement from his family.

He is regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, making one of the game's best saves to prevent a Pelé goal in the 1970 World Cup.

Around the city, where Banks is a revered figure and was often seen at charity and football events, flags were lowered at public buildings, and local radio talk-shows were inundated with calls remembering him.

"As soon as I got my hand to it, I thought it was going in the top corner", he said.

Knicks remove Kevin Durant photo from season ticket promotion ad
The portal that provides more season-ticket information had a photo of Mitchell Robinson with Durant standing in the background. Durant is averaging 27.3 points, 7.1 rebounds and six assists for Golden State so far this season, his third with the team.

"As I hit the floor I saw that the ball had missed the goal, " Banks said.

Boro then went on to beat Udinese 4-0, but two defeats in Italy ended any chance of them reaching the final. "It was an impossible play".

England manager Gareth Southgate added in a statement: "I am deeply saddened to hear of Gordon's passing".

'An all-time great for England, I was privileged enough to be in his company on a number of occasions'.

He made his global debut in 1963 and though he was not the headline-grabber in a high-scoring 4-2 victory in the Final of the 1966 FIFA World Cup, the contribution he made to the hosts' conquest throughout the tournament was irrefutable.

"Gordon was a fantastic goalkeeper, without doubt one of the best England has ever had", Charlton said.

Banks won 73 caps for England between 1963 and 1972 and made almost 200 appearances for Stoke before his playing career was brought to an end due to a vehicle crash that cost him the sight in one eye. He lost one of his kidneys to cancer in 2005 and revealed in 2015 that he was facing another battle against cancer. "One of the very greatest", he wrote on Twitter.

Stoke City chairman Peter Coates said Banks - who played 250 times for The Potters after he joined from Leicester in 1967 - had not been in good health for several weeks.
