Chicago Cops Examine Phone Records, Bleach Bottle In 'Empire' Incident

Smollett initially told police that during the attack he was on the phone with his manager, and his manager claims to have heard part of the attack - making him the only known witness.

Still, Guglielmi said the records Smollett provided are indicative of his willingness to cooperate and the department will be following up with Smollett's team for additional data. "He is a victim, and we treat him like a victim".

"We have no reason to doubt the statements but for a criminal investigation we need to independently confirm the phone records", Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

It is unclear if it's related to the attack. He reportedly told police that the men used racial and homophobic slurs before beating him, pouring what may have been bleach onto him, and leaving a noose around his neck before proclaiming, "This is MAGA country", as they left. A representative for Smollett has not commented. Smollett says that he was targeted in a hate crime for his race and sexual orientation.

Smollett is back in Chicago to work on the show. The alleged encounter occurred at 2AM.

Threatening letters directed at Smollett were reportedly sent to Fox Studios in Chicago a week before.

But sources told CBS News they've seen security video of Smollett outdoors early Tuesday morning and "nothing of an assault".

Tiger found in vacant Houston home
After a neighbor contacted 311 anonymously, police and BARC were alerted to a report of a tiger inside a southeast Houston home. Some tigers are smuggled into the USA from Mexico, and there are small pockets of breeding facilities across the country.

Chicago police have not been able to identify any legitimate suspects in the case, nor have they been able to find any surveillance footage of the attack.

Smollett was treated for minor injuries following the alleged attack after transporting himself to a local hospital. But, after officials pulled several surveillance videos of the area - none of which captured the incident - many grew skeptical about Smollett's case.

"It's a lie, because Chicago is the most liberal city around", a customer from an Irish Pub near the scene of the crime said, adding it "doesn't really make sense".

Moore said he overheard those remarks during the phone call and police want the phone records to corroborate the men's accounts of what happened.

"I've been in this neighborhood five years". I don't believe it, not around here ... All of these inconsistent reports have prompted some to say Smollett fabricated the attack.

Meanwhile, New York Post reports that residents who live in Jussie's building are giving the side-eye to his official version of events.
