Kamala Harris supports legalizing marijuana, says she 'did inhale' in college

"I have. And I did inhale", she said in an apparent reference to Bill Clinton's comments on the campaign trail in 1992 that he had smoked weed but "didn't inhale it".

I have. And I inhaled.

In an interview with The Breakfast Club hosts DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God that aired Monday, the show's hosts asked the California Democrat to respond to a series of disparaging memes that have been circulated on social media. Harris, who said she smoked a "long time ago", didn't answer, but she did use the language of Marie Kondo to endorse weed.

"Listen, I think that it gives more people joy", Harris added.

Harris said she has always been an advocate for states legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes, and now ants ot legalized in general.

'I didn't do it when I was young, ' she said in a 2014 town hall. Q: I know. HARRIS: And look, I joke about it - half-joking - half my family's from Jamaica. "Are you kidding me?" she joked.

But Harris said "we need to research the impact of weed on a developing brain" and said measuring how marijuana impairs people who are driving needs to be addressed.

"Something else it's past time we get done is dismantling the failed war on drugs - starting with legalising marijuana", Harris wrote in the book, which was released in January. In addition, he lets her weigh in on some absurd claim out there that she's not really black and was raised in Canada. In 2010, Proposition 19 was on ballots in California.

President Donald Trump has softened his 1990s-era view that states should legalize marijuana.

Harris's career as a California prosecutor has been under scrutiny as she ramps up her presidential campaign.

Harris, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, needled Barr, who said he does not support the current approach by the federal government allowing states to determine their own cannabis laws, despite federal law prohibiting its recreational use.

"That's not true", the senator told Charlemagne when he said people think she's against marijuana legalization.

"Um, I - that he is entitled to his opinion", Harris replied. By January of 2018, Harris's public position began to change.

And last month, Harris raised the issue with William Barr, the nominee for USA attorney general.

"Making marijuana legal at the federal level is the smart thing to do and it's the right thing to do". Day that she is officially throwing her hat into the ring and seeking the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 2020. Likely candidate Bernie Sanders is also onboard.

Harris explained that legalizing marijuana would be a big step forward in reforming the criminal justice system, which disproportionately incarcerates black Americans for petty, non-violent marijuana offenses. But neither is her admission to sparking a bit of joy in her youth.
