Juan Guaido calls on military to allow aid into Venezuela

Tensions rose when opposition leader Guaido declared himself acting president on January 23, a move which was supported by the USA and many European and Latin American countries.

Supporters of Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido said recently that a fund would be established to accept proceeds from sales of Venezuelan oil.

On the Venezuelan side of the border, dozens of doctors protested Sunday demanding the aid be allowed in - including surgeon Jose Luis Mateus de la Riva, who accused Maduro of sinking Venezuelan medicine back to the "medieval era". "They are waiting for that", Tarre said, noting that the aid is being provided by NGOs.

Maduro's supporters and far-left radicals in the United States have speculated since Guaidó's inauguration that the US may stage a military intervention in the Latin American country, an option Trump himself has repeatedly maintained remains "on the table". Maduro has denounced Guaido as a US puppet seeking to foment a coup.

Guaido's envoy to Brazil, Maria Teresa Belandria, said she had received assurances from Brazilian Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo over the new aid centre.
