Greece Approves NATO Protocol on Macedonia's Accession

After holding up its admission for years, Greece became the first nation Friday to ratify Macedonia's membership of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation after the two states resolved a decades-old name dispute last month.

The Greek Parliament has approved a measure for North Macedonia to join NATO, ending a decades-old dispute.

On 25 January, the Parliament ratified the Prespa Agreement, according to which Macedonia will be renamed, while Greece will lift its objections to the country's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and European Union membership.

Ruling Syriza and Potami parties backed the vote while main opposition New Democracy (ND) party and Independent Greeks (ANEL) voted against the protocol. DD News has been successfully discharging its responsibility to give balanced, fair and accurate news without sensationalizing as well as by carrying different shades of opinion.

The Republic of North Macedonia inches closer to joining NATO, but how does a country get invited? He said that his government had "done its patriotic duty" and would be judged by people and history.

Once all Nato member states have ratified the accession protocol, the Republic of North Macedonia will be a member of the Alliance.

Until then, the Republic of North Macedonia - as it will soon be - will not have the right to vote at alliance meetings. "Today we vote against the accession protocol, because it seals a national defeat at Prespes", he said.

A majority of 153 lawmakers supported the legislation, while 140 voted against.

Opponents of the historic agreement in Greece believe that the danger of irredentism is not over, as the agreement recognizes Macedonian language and identity for the citizens of the neighboring state, as Mitsotakis noted.
