Southampton and police to probe incident of fans mocking Emiliano Sala

Southampton said it will investigate an incident where two fans made gestures toward Cardiff City supporters allegedly mocking Emiliano Sala.

Two Saints fans were pictured making aeroplane gestures during their side's 2-1 home defeat by the Bluebirds and were spoken to by Hampshire Police.

The UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) confirmed on Wednesday that a body had been passed to the Dorset Coroner, having been recovered with the help of specialist contractors, and it was identified as Sala a day later.

"Our thoughts remain with the families of Emiliano and David Ibbotson", said a message on Cardiff's club Twitter account shortly before kick-off. However, it has since transpired that the men have also had their details taken by Hampshire police after being detained and now face a three-year banning order from attending Southampton matches.

"Such behaviour has no place in our game and will not be tolerated at St Mary's". Cardiff fans can be heard calling them "sick" as a steward approaches the pair.

Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala's family grieved on Friday after British authorities formally identified his body as the one recovered from the wreckage of a plane that went down in the Channel more than two weeks ago. Fans wore daffodils and sang his name throughout.

Saturday's early kick-off, in a scene that will be repeated across English football this weekend, saw players from Fulham and Manchester United wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for Sala.

Sala, 28, had recently signed a contract with the English Premier League club Cardiff City for a club record fee of about 17 million euros ($19m), after scoring 12 goals while playing for the French club Nantes.
