More snow expected Sunday night, Monday night and Tuesday

Almost 20 million people in the Northwest are under storm alerts Saturday morning as one to two more inches of snow are expected to fall in Seattle, according to CNN meteorologist Haley Brink.

In the mountains, there could be six to 10 inches of snow.

One county official warned the storm could be a "once every decade or two occurrence", CBS News' Carter Evans reported.

Earlier this week, Seattle was hit by the first snowstorm, with 2.7 inches blanketing the region - up from the 0.7 inches on average for February. Some roads were closed completely overnight Friday into Saturday. They took cover behind picnic tables and used sleds as shields.

Total snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches are expected in the interior lowland areas including Seattle, Everett, Tacoma, Bremerton, Bellevue, North Bend, Redmond and Kent.

Schools and colleges had canceled classes or planned for early release ahead of the storm.

The Sierra Avalanche Center has issued an avalanche watch for the Central Sierra Nevada including the Tahoe Basin starting from 7 a.m. Saturday.

"The system itself and the origin, it's more of a continental air mass, if there is some surprise precipitation that comes with it, it's going to be added moisture", Bollenbacher said. In Seattle, snowfall from Sunday and Monday lingered into the week as below-freezing temperatures gripped the area.

A storm that hit earlier in the week knocked out power in the area for thousands of residents and made travel incredibly hard.

Four to 8 inches of snow is expected in the areas surrounding Arco, Mackay, Mud Lake, the Caribou Highlands, the Bear Lake region and Swan Valley. If you see a downed power line, keep your distance and report it at 206-684-3000 or 911.

In Seattle, where heavy snowfall is a rarity, residents cleared out grocery store shelves and left work early Friday afternoon as the storm arrived. A storm was expected to hit the city Friday into Saturday.
