Dem Judiciary Rep. Jayapal: I Got the Sense Whitaker 'Wasn't Truthful'

The House Judiciary Committee's hearing with Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker got off to a raucous start Friday when the top Republican accused Democrats of staging a "dog and pony show" and called for an adjournment - before Whitaker said a word.

Swalwell, who primarily questioned Whitaker with regard to the Mueller investigation, began by asking whether the acting AG felt as though Mueller were an honest man.

Whitaker stood by his prior statement, saying, "I have answered your question as to what I believe about the special counsel".

"Mr. Chairman, I see that your five minutes is up, so..."

On Thursday, Nadler also claimed some Justice Department officials may have counseled Whitaker not to attend Friday's hearing.

"I am here voluntarily. We have agreed to five-minute rounds".

In one case, he refused to answer Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee's questions with a yes or no, and made a flippant remark about whether the time she had lost on the clock had been restored before he answered her questions. While the answer, eventually, was that he had not, the congresswoman objected when Whitaker would not answer with a requested "yes or no". When she asked the chairman if her time had been restored, Whitaker replied with a degree of snark, "I don't know whether your time's been restored or not".

Acting U.S. Attorney General Matthew Whitaker has agreed to testify on Friday before the House Judiciary Committee, the Justice Department said on Thursday, after he threatened to not show up following the panel's warning that it could subpoena him. "As part of that work I fully intend to call you back for an interview, under subpoena if necessary and I expect more answers at that time".

"This is my time". Mr. Whitaker, you don't run this committee. "You don't run the Congress of the United States, and you don't run the Judiciary Committee".

Nadler in particular suggested that Whitaker gave a misleading response when he said he did not talk to the White House about the Mueller probe before joining the Justice Department.

Mr. Swalwell then asked Mr. Whitaker to use the hearing to express that view to Mr. Trump.
