Fourth Hottest Year On Record, Says NASA

Overall, the past five years have been the five warmest years since records began in the late 1800s, according to a report released Wednesday. The data shows that the last five years are collectively the warmest ever recorded, while 18 of the 19 hottest years have taken place since 2001.

Global temperatures in 2018 were 0.83 degrees Celsius warmer than the 1951 to 1980, according to scientists at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in NY.

However, 2018 was actually cooler than 2015, 2016 and 2017.

CNN notes that the past three years have each set a record for the number of natural disasters hitting the USA that caused more than $1 billion in damage.

"Many of the extreme weather events are consistent with what we expect from a changing climate".

"The key issues in reducing emissions are moving towards renewable fuels for electricity, moving away from internal combustion engines for transport, sequestering carbon more efficiently in agriculture, making better decisions about how we organise our world so that we don't need so much energy", Schmidt said.

The UN body also said that 2019 had picked up where 2018 left off, with Australia experiencing its warmest January on record. More alarmingly, these expensive calamities are becoming more frequent.

Earth's long-term warming trend continued in 2018 as persistent warmth across large swaths of land and ocean resulted in the globe's fourth hottest year in NOAA's 139-year climate record. Average extent of sea ice in the Arctic was the second smallest on record in 2018.

The past three years have set records for billion-dollar disasters striking the United States, with 45 separate events.

"The 14 events, in total, claimed at least 247 lives and cost $91 billion", NOAA said in a statement. Right behind Michael were the western US wildfires and Hurricane Florence, which both racked up $24 billion in damages, according to NOAA.

This is also seen as a critical threshold for climate change, as it represents the lower bound of the average temperature rise.

He added he was "very concerned with what is going on in the Arctic", which is heating up at around double the rate of the global average.

"The secretary-general is working closely with member states and non-party stakeholders to bring outcomes to these areas to the summit that will send a strong market and political signal that can inject momentum into the race to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement", he said.
