INF nuclear treaty: Russian Federation plans new missile systems after pullout

When the Trump administration pulled the plug on a decades-old nuclear arms treaty with Russian Federation, it set the stage for delicate talks with USA allies over potential new American missile deployments.

"The issue of missiles under the treaty is directly linked to security in East Asia".

Military experts were hard-pressed to say what hypersonic missile Russian Federation planned to develop in response to Washington's exit from the INF treaty.

The United States announced on Friday it will withdraw from the INF treaty in six months unless Moscow ends what it says are violations of the 1987 pact.

After Pompeo's announcement, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang called the U.S. withdrawal "regrettable".

Putin said Russian Federation will start work on creating new missiles, including hypersonic ones, and told ministers not to initiate disarmament talks with Washington, accusing the USA of being slow to respond to such moves.

Lavrov added, however, that Russian Federation would, "of course... use the military and technical means to react to the threats created by" the USA pulling out of the INF.

U.S. plans to build low-power nuclear weapons will sharply lower the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons, according to both Russian and Western military experts, the Russian top diplomat emphasized.

Still, some experts say there are ways to move forward even in the wake of INF's demise that don't require a big new treaty - if the will is there. In the 1980s, the Soviet Union possessed an overwhelming advantage in troop numbers in Europe, so the USA needed a credible deterrent to forestall a potential Soviet invasion of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allied-country.

While responsible nations around the world are signing and ratifying the TPNW, almost every nation - nuclear-armed or not - is looking on in disbelief as Donald Trump shreds treaties and agreements.

"Concerns about Russian cheating, while substantial, were not strong enough to override support for this treaty-based effort to control nuclear arms", Steven Kull, director of Program for Public Consultation, said in a quote carried by the Institute for Public Integrity.

Sergei Shoigu promised rapid development of the country's defences, with a new land-based cruise missile and a new land-based hypersonic missile in the works. The threat of these weapons being employed was so great that it led to years of serious negotiations that culminated with President Reagan and President Gorbachev signing the INF treaty.

"Over the same period we will also have to create a land-based missile system with a long-range hypersonic missile", he said. "We can not be the only country in the world unilaterally bound by this treaty, or any other".

The mission comes as Paris looks to ensure its long-term nuclear dissuasion program, with Europe increasingly anxious about security as tensions rise between Washington and Moscow. "Not a single hard fact has been provided to us".

This will not start an arms race; one has been going on for 10 years at least. There is no immediate plan to revive talks aimed at crafting a new and comprehensive agreement, something that would be incredibly hard given the number and diversity of countries involved. The move followed reports that the Trump administration has begun manufacturing of new "low-yield" nuclear warheads which critics warn is helping to trigger a new nuclear arms race.
