United States stocks trade mixed amid earnings, data

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose on Friday, the first day of February, after the US government released jobs growth data that easily beat expectations.

On the data front, job growth in January beat expectations with total nonfarm payrolls increasing by 304,000 despite a partial government shutdown that was the longest in USA history, the Labor Department said Friday.

The report also showed no "discernible" impact on job growth from a 35-day partial government shutdown and came two days after the Federal Reserve signaled that its three-year interest rate hike campaign might be ending because of rising headwinds to the economy.

Adding to the optimism, USA job growth surged in January, pointing to underlying strength in the economy despite a darkening outlook that has left the Fed wary about more interest rate hikes this year.

Data showed China's manufacturing sector shrank in January for the second straight month, heightening risks for global growth amid a trade war with United States.

President Donald Trump said he would meet Chinese President Xi Jinping soon to try and seal a comprehensive trade deal.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 25.64 points, or 0.10 percent, at the open to 25,025.31.

The insurer's shares, along with other pharmacy benefit managers, took a hit after the US government proposed a rule to end the industry-wide system of rebates, which they get from drugmakers, in efforts to lower the cost of prescription drugs for consumers.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies picked up 2.64 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,502.05.

The S&P 500 is up 199.68 points, or 8 percent.
