Earth's oldest rock found on Moon

Earth's oldest rock found on Moon

"We were able to use the samples collected by NASA astronauts during the Apollo missions to date some of the craters".

The team acknowledged that the fragment could have formed deep beneath the moon's surface, but it's much more likely it formed on Earth.

As Dr Thomas Gernon, associate professor in Earth Science at Southampton University who was involved in the study, revealed, researchers arrived at this conclusion by studying the surface of Moon which, as he pointed out, "is our nearest neighbour so gets hits by the same population of asteroids". On the lunar surface, the rock was subsequently mixed with other materials into one sample.

"It is an extraordinary find that helps paint a better picture of early Earth and the bombardment that modified our planet during the dawn of life", said David Kring, a senior staff scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas.

The rock contains the minerals quartz, zircon, and feldspar - all minerals commonly found on Earth, but not on the moon.

The idea is that collision blast produces lots of big rocks, and over billion year time-scales these rocks break down after being bombarded by many micro-meteorites.

Researchers believe that the rock fragment may have originated on the Earth.

The cause of the this mass extinction event - known as the K-T impact - was most likely a massive asteroid impact.

Male Los Angeles Rams cheerleaders will make history at Super Bowl LIII
The Patriots and Rams will meet in Atlanta in Super Bowl LIII on February 3. This season, 26 of the NFL's 32 teams had cheerleaders.

Chemical analysis of the fragment showed it crystallized in an environment that could be found on ancient Earth but not on the moon, said the team led by Jeremy Bellucci and Alexander Nemchin at the Swedish Museum of Natural History and Curtin University in Australia.

Scientists believe that the moon itself was formed around 4.5 billion years ago as a result of a collision between the Earth and another astronomical body approximately the size of Mars.

Rock fragment from the Moon.

It partially melted 3.9 billion years ago which buried it under the surface.

The Earth is believed to have been formed in the early Solar System almost 4.5 billion years ago.

Now, 48 years on, experts are claiming that this relic was once part of Earth after it ended up on the moon after large comet or asteroid collided with the planet.

About 26 million years ago, the team says, another asteroid impact created the Cone Crater and knocked the rock back up to the moon's surface. They also determined - based on the sample's geochemical properties - that it must have formed at a depth of about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) beneath Earth's surface. "While the Hadean Earth is a reasonable source for the sample, the first find of this kind may be a challenge for the geologic community to digest". The trail followed by the Apollo 14 astronauts can be seen.

Founded in 1969, under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences at the request of the U.S. Government, the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) is a nonprofit corporation chartered to advance space-related science, technology and engineering. The research carried out at the LPI supports NASA's efforts to explore the solar system.
