Simona Halep beats Venus and will face Serena Williams

Top seed Simona Halep had the odds stacked against her ahead of the Australian Open but the Romanian proved her title credentials with a breezy 6-2, 6-3 third round win over multiple Grand Slam victor Venus Willliams on Saturday.

No scene better demonstrates the disparity between Williams, a 37-year-old, 23-time Grand Slam champ, mother and the most famous woman in tennis, and so numerous players she faces.

'Everything she's done for us, demanding equal prize money, demanding equal play really makes me not really want to focus on what I can do on the court but what I do off the court.

Yastremska, who wasn't even born when the American won her first major singles title in 1999, was in tears as she walked around the net to shake the hand of her childhood hero.

But since then Halep has won her first Grand Slam title, having triumphed at last year's French Open.

Williams has dropped just nine games from her opening three matches and will next face either last year's runner-up Simona Halep or sister Venus on Monday. "You did really well", Williams told an emotional Yastremska after her victory on Rod Laver Arena.

"I kind of liked that".

She hit her first chance into the net but completed the win after Yastremska sent a return wide. "That really broke my heart", Williams said.

Liam Neeson's nephew dies 5 years after tragic fall
The British actress died at the age of 45 from serious head injuries inflicted in a skiing accident in March 2009. Sexton's accident in 2014, occurred five years after the death of Neeson's wife, Richardson.

"I played many times against her", said Halep. "It's good to see that attitude", she added.

Yastremska had treatment on her right foot but it was only delaying the inevitable and Williams took just a few minutes to bring up match point after play resumed.

When asked if she has ever experienced a similar reaction when playing a match in her teens, Williams said she did as a young player and as an adult.

Williams last won the Open in 2017 but withdrew from the 2018 tournament following her pregnancy. Another Halep break courtesy of a Williams forehand error put the first set on the Romanian's racquet and she served it out after 39 minutes.

She mentioned Venus was one of the players that left her crying after defeat. I will not super think about this because is nothing to think, just go there and play natural and with confidence.

Looking ahead, Halep said: "It's going to be a bigger challenge". I have to move her and give my best. "I haven't played the world No. 1 since I've been back". I'm used to face her.

Halep set up the fourth-round blockbuster by sending the 23-time major winner's older sister Venus packing in straight sets. Halep broke again to open the second set but this time Williams managed to respond immediately. Both women have legitimate claims to being the top player in the game.

After comforting the world No.57 on court, Williams took her aside in the changing rooms to tell she had been hard done to have received a time violation during the match.
