Divers swim with giant great white shark off Oahu's coast

The beast was caught on camera off the coast of Hawaii by divers who were able to swim with her.

(Picture: Reuters) The enormous predator known as "Deep Blue", is believed to weigh around 2.5tons and measure up to 20 ft, was first seen by Mark Mohler and Kimberly Jeffries, who are both photographers, on Sunday last week.

"Love this big lovely girl", one netizen wrote when Deep Blue was spotted in Mexico back in 2015. According to Melanie Hutchinson, a shark researcher for the University of Hawaii, they typically stick to deeper waters when in the area.

Initial reports indicated the shark was Deep Blue, who was tagged 20 years ago and is believed to be 50 years old.

A six-metre great white was confirmed to be the largest seen off WA's coast in 1984.

Posting on Instagram shortly after the swim, Oliphant wrote: "Face to face with the worlds largest great white ever recorded 'Deep Blue" with @oceanramsey.

She added that she is fighting for legislation to protect sharks.

A German tourist, Michael Maier, recounted filming the shark on a trip to Mexico in 2014. Researchers are speculating that Deep Blue may be pregnant.

"Big pregnant females are actually the safest ones to be with - the biggest, oldest ones - because they've seen it all, including us", Ms Ramsey said. We realised nearly immediately that she was very big. She was very interested and was looking at us, ' he continued.

"Tonight when I got home and after I got off the phone with the news something someone said bothered me", she wrote on Facebook on Jan 16.
