China’s Military Modernizing to Invade Taiwan, Says Pentagon Report

On Jan. 2, Xi said in a speech that China reserved the right to use force to bring Taiwan under its control but would strive to achieve peaceful "reunification".

"Reportedly, the PLA owns and operates about half of these systems, most of which could support monitoring, tracking, and targeting of U.S. forces", states the Air Force report.

The unclassified report by the Defense Intelligence Agency says China's advancements in areas like naval design, medium-and intermediate-range missiles and in hypersonic weapons are stupendous.

"As it (China's military power) continues to grow in strength and confidence, our nation's leaders will face a China insistent on having a greater voice in global interactions, which at times may be antithetical to U.S. interests", Lieutenant General Robert Ashley, director of the DIA, wrote in the report.

The DIA report referenced a Chinese white paper from 2015, titled "China Military Strategy" (pdf), where the Chinese regime explained that while world war is unlikely, it intends to prepare for the possibility of local war.

"China shifted funds and efforts to acquiring technology by any means available".

"Domestic laws forced foreign partners of Chinese-based joint ventures to release their technology in exchange for entry into China's lucrative market, and China has used other means to secure needed technology and expertise". The growing military might of China is said to be the primary focus for acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, who defense officials said has repeatedly raised China as a topic in closed-door meetings in the Pentagon since he took the Defense Department's reins January 1.
