Former ‘To Catch a Predator’ host accused of bouncing checks

Hansen never delivered the money and police issued a warrant for his arrest.

"Peter ... I truly thought I had this covered", Hansen wrote, according to the affidavit obtained by Stamford Advocate.

Hansen, who lives in New York City but is a former resident of the CT suburb of Stamford, bought the swag including mugs and t-shirts from a Stamford business in the summer of 2017, Stamford Police property crimes Sgt. Sean Scanlan tells CBS News.

According to police, Hansen was given a bill totaling just under $13,000 and agreed to pay for the items in full before they were delivered, but the check he issued almost three months after receiving an invoice bounced.

Hansen turned himself in to police and was released without bond after signing a Promise to Appear in court at the end of the month. The TV journalist and author bought 355 mugs, 288 T-shirts and 650 vinyl decals for marketing events he planned to attend.

In September 2017, the company allegedly turned over the goods after receiving a check issued by Hansen News LLC ― a company reportedly led by Hansen ― for the entire amount.

When investigators contacted Hansen, he refused to speak on the issue, police said.

The US-based worldwide chain has the right to appeal against the decision. "This is a victory for all small businesses". The ruling can be appealed all the way to the EU's highest court in Luxembourg, and McDonald's plans to fight.

Psichopaidas said he received a check from Hansen for $13,200 in April 2018 but it bounced, the arrest affidavit stated.

The check bounced and Hansen apologized before he offered to pay his bill in partial payments. Hansen told Psichopaidas via email that he "sold a boat" to cover the payment.

However, Hansen allegedly did not write another check. "I am scrambling to get it done".

Psichopaidas gave Hansen plenty of time to pay his debt, and various opportunities, but every time the former show host would hand him a cheque, it would bounce.

Hansen's show To Catch a Predator was cancelled in 2008 but repeats continue to air.

On "To Catch a Predator", segments featured on NBC's news magazine, "Dateline NBC," Hansen and his crew used hidden-camera techniques to catch sexual predators. The show followed Hansen as he exposed predators who believed they were speaking to underage children.
