Turkey urges United States to honour partnership after Trump warns of economic devastation

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a telephone conversation against attacking Kurdish military units that have been closely allied to U.S. forces in Syria.

Last month, Trump declared victory over Daesh* in Syria, subsequently announcing the withdrawal of 2,000 USA troops now deployed in the Mideast country. The pullout began last week.

Also on Sunday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the planned US troop withdrawal from Syria amounted to a "tactical change" that would not alter the overall USA mission to inflict a lasting defeat on the Islamic State, counter Iran and safeguard local partnered forces.

The Pentagon has suggested positioning Special Operations troops in nearby Iraq, where they could attack in Syria if needed.

The "long overdue" American withdrawal from Syria has begun, President Trump said in a tweet Sunday before casually threatening to destroy the economy of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally.

The lira slipped again after the latest Trump tweet.

Speaking with TRT World, Egemen Bagis, former Turkish minister of European Union affairs said, "Turkey doesn't have anything against Kurds..."

Washington is holding talks with all relevent sides about such a "safe zone", he added.

Trump also said the USA would also create a "20-mile safe zone".

"Will devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds", Trump tweeted on Sunday, while pushing for the creation of a 20-mile (30-km) "safe zone". Erdogan also canceled a meeting with Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton. If he thinks that way, he is in a big mistake. On Friday, the US-led coalition said it had started the pullout, but officials later said only equipment, not troops, were going.

"Out of concern for operational security, we will not discuss specific timelines, locations or troop movements", Ryan said.

All this is thanks to President Donald Trump's recent snap decision to withdraw US military forces from Syria; an inevitable (and correct) outcome given that post-ISIS Syria is not a vital USA national security interest and there was never enough political will-under this administration or the previous one-to fight an open-ended conflict in Syria for goals with indeterminate outcomes.

In a recent tweet, POTUS wrote that it was time to stop "the endless wars" and bring U.S. troops back home. "Stop the ENDLESS WARS!" That activity is underway.

"We will continue to fight against them all", the tweet reads.

"The lasting defeat of ISIS is still the mission and they still present a very real threat to the long-term stability in this region, so it is not over yet".

Just because a "couple thousand uniform personnel" will be leaving Syria, Pompeo said, doesn't mean that USA interests have changed.

The two leaders also agreed to advance bilateral economic relations. He, however, also urged the Kurds not to provoke Ankara. "Terrorists can't be your partners & allies", the spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, said.

"The United States of America can project military power from lots of places in the world".

"It was probably a bad idea for Bolton to go rogue and try to impose conditions on the United States withdrawal from Syria", wrote Turkey's pro-government publication Daily Sabah.

"That certainly includes in Syria". We still have those tools.

But Washington has been working closely in recent years with the YPG, providing military support and training, in the fight against IS in Syria.
