Trump denies hiding detail of Putin summit talks from staff

That account followed another in The New York Times that the FBI became so alarmed after Trump fired director James Comey in May 2017 that it opened a counterintelligence investigation into whether he was acting on Russia's behalf.

Needless to say, this is all very unusual behavior for a United States president, and Trump has not attempted to hide his interactions with other world leaders.

He said: "I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked".

"Wow, just learned in the Failing New York Times that the corrupt former leaders of the FBI, nearly all fired or forced to leave the agency for some very bad reasons, opened up an investigation on me, for no reason & with no proof, after I fired Lyin' James Comey, a total sleaze!" I think it's the most insulting article I've ever had written.

Former US officials told the The Washington Post that Trump's behavior is at odds with the known practice of previous presidents, who rely on senior aides to witness such meetings. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), the new committee chairman, to hold investigative hearings into whether Trump has been "compromised by" Russian Federation.

"If you ask the folks in Russian Federation, I've been tougher on Russian Federation than anybody else, any other ... probably any other president, period, but certainly the last three or four presidents". Trump also wrote that those who initiated the investigations, mostly former FBI leaders he has fired for "very bad reasons", did it with "no reason and no proof" as a response to his firing of Comey.

The inquiry forced counterintelligence investigators to evaluate whether Trump was a potential threat to national security.

The FBI investigation was subsequently folded into the broader probe by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and possible collaboration by the Trump campaign. They also sought to determine whether President Trump was deliberately working for Russian Federation or had unintentionally been influenced by Moscow. The Times reported Mueller also took over the counterintelligence investigation, but the paper said it is unclear whether that aspect of his investigation is ongoing.

Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said the report "may well suggest what it was that helped start this investigation in the first place".

"This is about the most serious counterintelligence people we have in the USA government saying, 'Oh, my God, the president's words and actions lead us to conclude that somehow he has become a witting, unwitting, or half-witting pawn, certainly in some regards, to Vladimir Putin, '" Bernstein explained during his appearance on Reliable Sources.

President Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani told the Times he had no knowledge of the inquiry but said that since it was opened a year and a half ago and they hadn't heard anything, apparently "they found nothing".

"When you get outside the Beltway, I don't see anyone concerned about this at all", Cruz told NBC News' Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press", according to NBC News.

Trump has repeatedly criticized the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt" and views it as an attempt to besmirch the legitimacy of his presidency.
