Steve King defends himself on House floor against 'white nationalist' criticism

Scott, from SC, criticized King's comments, in an op-ed in the Washington Post on Friday entitled: "Why are Republicans accused of racism?".

In the same interview, King insists he's not a racist, just a fan of white culture.

"One of my most strongly held beliefs is that we are all created in God's image and that human life is sacred in all its forms", he said. That was my mistake, " King told his colleagues. King said in the interview, which was published Thursday.

"When people with opinions similar to King's open their mouths, they damage not only the Republican Party and the conservative brand but also our nation as a whole", Sen. Scott wrote an op-ed slamming Republican lawmaker Steve King for his white supremacist comments.

"King's comments are not conservative views but separate views that should be ridiculed at every turn possible", Scott wrote for the Post.

Some in our party wonder why Republicans are constantly accused of racism - it is because of our silence when things like this are said.

The Congressional Black Caucus on Saturday condemned Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, and called on King's fellow Republicans to remove him from his committee assignments.

Those looking for a significant primary challenge to King may find hope in Iowa State Senator Randy Feenstra, who announced earlier this week that he is taking steps to run against the incumbent in the GOP primary next year.

"Republicans have always stood by Steve King all the way up to and including the night before the election when (Gov.) Kim Reynolds ended her campaign with Steve King up in Sioux Center and then a week later says, 'Oh, Steve King needs to really think about what his future is going to be, '" Price said.

King faced backlash in 2017 for saying "we can't restore our civilization with someone else's babies" referencing his opposition to immigration. But we know that conservatives certainly care about which country immigrants come from, and despite there being more security concerns on the northern border, neither Trump nor his most anti-immigrant supporters like Steve King have ever advocated for a dumb wall between the USA and Canada. He has also tweeted that "diversity isn't out strength".

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., the party's sole African American in the Senate, said King was a phenomenon because the party did not do enough to marginalize his like. He said the foundation of the Times interview was partly a September 12 tweet in which he wrote: "Nazi' is injected into Leftist talking points because the worn out & exhausted "racist" is over used & applied to everyone who lacks melanin & who fail to virtue signal at the requisite frequency & decibels".

King, who has been frequently criticized for comments he has made regarding race and immigration, was under fire for comments he made that appeared to defend white nationalism.

"How did that offensive language get injected into our political dialogue?" he said. He elaborates that he's not even opposed to having immigrants come to the country so long as they assimilate to the values and customs spread by the white Europeans who founded the United States.
