Ring employees can reportedly access customers' live camera feeds

According to The Intercept, Ring has been storing videos from all user's smart camera products in an unencrypted cloud folder that is freely available to employees.

Even more damning is the claim that "executives and engineers" in the US were given "highly privileged access", allowing them "unfiltered, round-the-clock live feeds from some customer cameras".

The unencrypted videos were shared between employees on company servers and included footage from outside and, in some cases, inside users' homes.

The Information hinted that these entire Amazon-owned Ring's privacy invasion began with their research and development team based on Ukraine.

In addition to the Ukrainian R&D team, Ring also reportedly gave US-based engineers and executives "highly privileged access" they didn't require to a video portal containing customer camera videos. Customers can choose to share some information - such as photos of the hair cut they got last time they visited a salon - but the businesses can't access anything stored in user profiles unless users specifically allow them to.

Another database linked every video file with the specific customer that it belonged to. The source said, "if [someone] knew a reporter or competitor's email address, [they] could view all their cameras".

Ring also hired people to watch these potentially sensitive videos and tag the contents of them to help aid in the "machine learning" capabilities of its virtual neighbourhood watch network, "Neighbours".

The said operation, however, has been reportedly compromised as employees are heard to have not kept their job and the videos private and even used the technology to even spy at one another and teasing whoever brings home a date.

How Much Tim Tebow Spent on His Fiancée's Engagement Ring

A report claims that Ring employees had nearly nonrestricted access to customer's video feed and recorded clips. This process has reportedly been going on for years, possibly even to this day.

Further, the spokesperson said that the company has systems in place to restrict and audit employee access to information, and holds their team members to a high ethical standard.

On the other hand, Amazon-owned Ring issued a statement clarifying that their employees only watch videos acquired from Neighbors, the community app.

"We take the privacy and security of our customers" personal information extremely seriously, ' the spokesperson told the Intercept.

The only thing needed to view the video feeds of these Ring users was the user email address. These recordings are sourced exclusively from publicly shared Ring videos from the Neighbors app (in accordance with our terms of service), and from a small fraction of Ring users who have provided their explicit written consent to allow us to access and utilize their videos for such purposes.

'We have zero tolerance for abuse of our systems and if we find bad actors who have engaged in this behavior, we will take swift action against them, ' they added.
