Ottawa bus crash leaves 3 dead, 23 injured

The bus crash that killed three people and injured as many as 17 happened at Westboro bus station, a transit access point that accommodates several routes west of downtown Ottawa.

Nepean's MP said the crash reminded her of another devastating incident involving an OC Transpo bus in Barrhaven back in 2013.

Ottawa Police say that the accident took place at 3:50 p.m.at Westboro Station.

"It is with deep sadness that I report there were three confirmed casualties, two of which were on the bus and one that was on the platform", Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said at a news conference, Reuters news agency reports.

The investigators worked all night to identify with certainty the three victims and to make contact with their families and loved ones. He wouldn't say why she was detained rather than submitting to questions voluntarily.

OC Transpo, which is in charge of Ottawa's public transportation, tweeted on its verified account, "Buses are being detoured as a result" of the collision. He said police were still investigating the cause of the crash.

He has said he is willing to allow the shutdown to continue until a concession is granted. Opponents say Rubio's measure infringes on free speech.

The investigation will take a long time and likely will mean the closure of the busway and nearby roads for at least many hours, Bordeleau said.

"The bus started swerving, I guess it hit the curb or hit something".

Images of the crash during the afternoon rush hour showed upper deck seats hanging from a gaping hole at the front of the bus, firefighters on ladders trying to reach the injured and a lineup of 25 ambulances waiting in the biting cold to take them to hospitals. "There was definitely people pinned".

The driver of the OC Transpo bus was released unconditionally pending further investigation.

The family reunification centre at the Churchill Seniors Centre has since been closed, but people seeking information about family members involved in Friday's crash can call the Canadian Red Cross at 1-855-797-8875.
