Florida governor will be in Broward County, possibly to announce sheriff's suspension

In one of his first acts after taking office, Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday made a historic appointment to the Florida Supreme Court, naming appellate Judge Barbara Lagoa as the high court's first Cuban-American female justice. "It is my pleasure and my privilege to appoint Barbara Lagoa to the Florida Supreme Court with full confidence she will serve our state with the utmost integrity".

"We want to make sure that Florida is doing what it needs to do to protect its communities", he said. "And it is the role of judges to interpret our Constitution and statutes as they are written", she said.

According to Lagoa's court profile, while a practicing lawyer, she was admitted to practice by the Florida Bar, the U.S. District Courts for the Middle and Southern Districts of Florida, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

DeSantis said Lagoa is the first Hispanic woman appointed to the Supreme Court, but former Chief Justice Rosemary Barkett was born in Mexico to Syrian parents and spoke only Spanish until moving to the U.S.

"In the country my parents fled, the whim of as single individual could mean the difference between food or hunger, liberty or prison, life or death".

"She has been the essence of what a judge should be" the governor said. "Unlike the country my parents fled, we are a nation of laws, not of men".

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis followed up on a campaign promise Thursday by signing an executive order created to address the environmental issues that have been plaguing the state.

He has said he is willing to allow the shutdown to continue until a concession is granted. Opponents say Rubio's measure infringes on free speech.

DeSantis is expected to announce two more nominations to the state Supreme Court in the near future. But even so, DeSantis still managed to exceed critics' expectations by indicating that a state where former Gov. Rick Scott banned environmental regulators from using the phrase "climate change" is now willing to work to at least combat the symptoms of an existential problem.

Florida Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, said in a statement he is confident that Lagoa will fit the judicial temperament that DeSantis laid out in his inaugural address, which called for a more limited role for the Supreme Court. Her appointment, replacing retiring Justice Fred Lewis, is effective immediately.

"The Cuban people do not know what laws apply to them or whether they will receive a fair trial after arbitrarily being accused of political crimes", he said. Now, that's not going to be like the old state planes where the Cabinet and other people could do it. "She understands the rule of law, how important that is to a society".

DeSantis, who campaigned as a critic of the Big Sugar farmers, said he is working with the White House and U.S. Army Corps to end the massive water releases from Lake Okeechobee.

"So, all and all, I think what we've done is really, really strong", DeSantis concluded before signing the order. She now is a member of the Eugene P. Spellman and William Hoeveler Chapter of the American Inns of Court, the Junior League of Miami, and Fairchild Tropical Gardens.

The governor recalled that, when he announced Nuñez as his running-mate previous year, he said "Jeanette's life, what she's done, was really an inspiration to a lot of young women".

Environmental groups say they are "encouraged" by the announcement of Gov. Ron DeSantis detailing a major policy order in his first week in office regarding water quality.
