Browns will hire Steve Wilks as new defensive coordinator

Technically the Browns have yet to finalize a deal with new head coach Freddie Kitchens.

Kitchens hired 2 of his coordinators - special teams and defense - Friday.

According to NFL.com reporter Ian Rapoport, the Browns will hire Wilks as the team's new defensive coordinator.

The Browns defensive coordinator opening was vacated after Gregg Williams, who began 2018 as the team's defensive coordinator, was elevated to interim head coach in the wake of Hue Jackson's firing.

Per multiple reports, the Browns have interviews either lined up or already completed with potential defensive coordinators Chuck Pagano and Steve Wilks, as well as offensive coordinator candidates Jim Bob Cooter and Todd Monken.

Wilks, who was the Panthers' assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 2017 and a former defensive backs coach for the Panthers, Chargers and Bears, was sacked after 1 season in Arizona that saw the Cardinals go 3-13 resulting in landing the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Williams himself was sacked at the conclusion of the season and replaced by Freddie Kitchens, the former Arizona assistant and Browns offensive coordinator.
