Mercedes-Benz unveils stunning new CLA coupe

Meanwhile, models such a smaller convertible have been ruled out simply due to a lack of interest in markets such as China.

Is now longer, wider and lower than before. The CLA-Class gets the same cabin as the A-Class and it's tough to beat in the segment.

Thanks to a raft of driver assistance gadgets inherited from its bigger brothers, the little four-door is also able to drive semi-autonomously in certain situations, with advanced camera and radar systems allowing it to see up to half a kilometre ahead.

The technology show is an unconventional choice for a traditional auto manufacturer to unveil, or in this case stage the world debut of an internal combustion model, but Mercedes-Benz insists that the smart tech in the new CLA makes it apt. No, don't get me wrong, it will still slot below the C-Class. But it now looks as good on the inside as it did on the outside and boasts of features straight from the flagship S-Class.

The 2019 CLA is 48mm longer, 53mm wider, has a 30mm longer wheelbase and sits 2 mm lower. Much like its hatchback brethren (the A-Class), the four-door now comes with an aggressive front fascia courtesy of flatter LED headlights, a sportier front grill and a more aerodynamic front bumper.

Unifor says GM rejected plan to keep Oshawa plant open beyond 2019
GM announced in November that work at the plant would end by December 2019, a decision that Unifor has forcefully challenged. The GM shutdowns include assembly plants in Warren, Ohio, and Detroit, and parts factories in Maryland and Warren, Michigan.

The silhouette remains more or less the same but the rear boot reminds us of the C-Coupe. The dated dashboard has now been replaced by the MBUX dual-screen setup which made its debut in the all-new A-Class. MBUX is Mercedes-Benz's latest and greatest infotainment software, created to replace the old turn-dial menu-based system. It is dominated by the MBUX system which comprises of two large floating screens (one being the instrument cluster and the other a touchscreen for infotainment) under one glass.

A new interior assist system enables gesture control of certain functions and it is said the vehicle can detect whether the driver or passenger is using the touchscreen and react accordingly. Staying true to its "coupe-inspired looks", the 2020 CLA retains the long hood, short deck styling from before. It will furthermore be offered with the option of Multibeam LED headlamps. Adaptive dampers are optional, as are 19-inch wheels.

As far as performance goes, the only engine available here in the USA will be the brand's 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 221 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The engine will be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which we hope is improved over the previous CLA's clunky one.

However, there will eventually be a broad range of petrol and diesel engines, Mercedes promises, some featuring 4Matic all-wheel-drive.

Also, the CLA now gets a wider track (+63 mm front and +55 mm rear) and a lower centre of gravity to aid its cornering ability. This means a decoupled multi-link axle at the rear and the Direct-Steer system as standard.
