You have arrived at a new era for the Global Positioning System (GPS).

SpaceX sued the U.S. Flying corps in 2014 over the military's honor of a multibillion-dollar, non-contend contract for 36 rocket dispatches to United Launch Alliance, an organization of Boeing and Lockheed.

SpaceX wedged the launch in before the new year, marking its 21st launch in 2018 - a record. The new L1C civil signal also will make it the first GPS satellite broadcasting a compatible signal with other worldwide global navigation satellite systems, like the European Union's Galileo system.

Built by, the satellite could eventually be one of as many as 32 satellites that the Air Force may order over the coming years to modernize its current satellite constellation. The Air Force nicknamed the satellite "Vespucci" after Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci.

The US Air Force monitors the location of the launch known as the 45th Space Wing, helping to set up road blocks and clear relevant air space.

The next GPS III satellite is due to launch in mid-2019 and the subsequent satellites will undergo testing in the company's Colorado processing facility. Last summer the Air Force "called up" the satellite for launch and Lockheed Martin delivered it to Florida on August 20. The original launch window was 8:55 a.m.

But it'll be a while before Vespucci, which was built by aerospace company Lockheed Martin, is fully up and running. However, the Air Force's work on the ground-based systems that is mandatory to operate it is still in progress, according to the Verge. The vice president was in Florida to announce that President Donald Trump had ordered the, a unified combatant command to provide control of all military space operations.
