Fire at Chester Zoo leads to evacuation of visitors

After some earlier confusion after fire service statements, the Zoo has clarified: "The zoo's teams are now assessing the situation inside Monsoon Forest".

"It started as a little fire. which we saw but it's obviously much worse now!" Crews have been using breathing apparatus and main jets to tackle the blaze in a building that is 100m x 25m big.

According to the zoo's website, the Monsoon Forest Habitat, home to tropical plants and animals, is the largest indoor zoo exhibit in United Kingdom history.

UPDATE 12:50pm: "We can confirm that the fire brigade is now fighting a fire in our Monsoon Forest habitat".

Chester Zoo said in a statement: 'We can confirm that the fire brigade is attending a fire in our Monsoon Forest habitat.

Thankfully, it's since been announced that all animals are safe and there are no injuries reported.

The zoo tweeted to say it had closed the whole site, adding: "Visitors have been evacuated and our response team is working alongside emergency services to bring the situation under control".

He said fire crews arrived "immediately" and zoo staff were handling the situation "very well".

"Drivers are advised to avoid the area whilst emergency services continue to work at the scene".

Smoke can be seen billowing into the sky due to what one witness described as a "big fire". It spread very quickly.

Every effort has been made to minimise disruption in the local area and I would also like to thank members of the public for their co-operation and understanding.

A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance Service said it was called to the scene at 11.42am on Saturday.

"We will provide further updates when we can".
