Photos shared on social media by Stelter and others show police investigating the alleged threat near the Time Warner Center complex, where CNN's NY head office is housed.

But NBC News" local New York City station tweeted the "bomb threat was called in moments after Trump's "fake news' tweet".

Staffers evacuated the CNN New York offices in the Time Warner Center building and Don Lemon's "CNN Tonight", which had been on a commercial break, was taken off the air.

"We have closed the perimeter at Columbus Circle and cleared the building", New York Police Detective Hubert Reyes said.

CNN said several fire alarm bells signaling an evacuation rang inside its newsroom shortly after 10:30pm. The network went to playing taped content instead of being live.

Police said the building was evacuated and building security did a preliminary search. The NYPD said they were investigating.

Reacting to the threat, CNN's Chris Cuomo said that everyone was "fine" despite the evacuation.

"Update to follow", the NYPD tweeted.

The bomb threat was phoned-in, according to CNN.

"We were evacuated in the middle of my live show", Lemon tweeted.

CNN was also evacuated in October after a package with an explosive device, addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan, was discovered.
