Meng was arrested in Vancouver on December 1 while transferring planes on a trip from Hong Kong to Mexico, at the request of U.S. authorities seeking her extradition. The official China Daily said yesterday in an editorial there was still "no telling" on what grounds she had been detained, and that it seemed to be part of USA plans to pressure its allies not to use Huawei goods.

Meng was arrested while changing planes in Vancouver.

"If you have infinite resources, the value of pledges diminishes", the lawyer representing Canada's attorney general said.

Meng arrived in the packed Supreme Court of British Columbia on Friday as dozens of photographers jostled outside the building.

The lawyer said that Meng had personally denied to American bankers any direct connections between Huawei and SkyCom, when in fact "SkyCom is Huawei". He argued that her wealth should not disqualify her from getting bail, and suggested use of tools such as electronic monitoring to ensure she stays in the country.

"[If] those allegations are proven true, she will be in jail for 30 years".

Meng was arrested in Vancouver last Saturday at the US' request, on suspicion of violating United States sanctions against Iran. Her bond request was debated in a Canadian court Friday, pending her extradition to the US.

"I think Canada's standing in China has dropped quite substantially", Courtis said of Article 32.10 of the NAFTA replacement.

When financial institutions asked Huawei about the article, Meng allegedly denied Huawei controlled SkyCom.

"Yet Washington, in persuading and pressuring its allies to shun cooperation with Huawei, has helped erode that political trust", the English-language paper said.

Under China's National Intelligence Law, Chinese organizations have to support, assis, and cooperate with state intelligence work.

The governments of the UK, Australia and New Zealand have moved to prevent Huawei technology being used in their future 5G mobile phone networks, following a U.S. drive to stop its allies from purchasing from the company.
