Google Finally Kills Allo Messaging App

In a recent blog post, Google outlines its renewed focus on Android Messages and Duo when it comes to consumer chat apps, with Chat and Meet being focused on businesses.

Update, December 6 2018 (02:59AM): We got word yesterday that Google would be killing off Allo, and now the search colossus has confirmed the news on its official blog.

Google was criticized by privacy advocates for storing messages in a way that would allow the company access to them; this opened the door for law enforcement requests who would then gain access to a user's chat history on legal request as well.

The shutdown has been expected for some time. As such, the company says that it is "bringing the best of Allo to Messages", partly because it wants "every single Android device to have a great default messaging experience". It does seem that Hangouts is being focused more on team collaboration rather than normal chat, and Messages may take over the latter goal. Launched in September 2016, this app will continue to work through March 2019.

Hangouts precursor Google Talk lived on within Gmail for over a decade, only to be finally phased out in favor of Hangouts a year ago. And after that it will be gone. That doesn't mean the service itself is immediately going away. At its height, the app had the attention of less than 50 million users. After March 2019 passes, all Allo conversations will be deleted, Google says. That still leaves Messages, Hangouts Chat, Hangouts Meet, Duo and Google Voice. "We're fully committed to supporting Hangouts users in the meantime", wrote Klainer.

Google has found itself with an overwhelming number of messaging options as it seems to throw stuff at the wall, see what sticks and call it spaghetti.

Today's announcement does a certain amount to change all that, but still leaves Messaging, Duo and Hangouts doing more or less the same job in a different way.
