Gaza court sentences 6 people to hang for 'collaborating' with Israel

Nasser Suliman, head of military judiciary, announces during a press conference that the military court sentenced to death six men convicted of collaborating with Israel, at the Hamas military judiciary building in Gaza City, Monday, Dec. 3, 2018.

According to Gaza's interior ministry, a total of 14 people were sentenced for "collaborating with the occupation", with six sentenced to be hanged and the rest sentenced to hard labor.

He warned that "collaboration with the Israeli occupation is risky and the punishment of collaboration is high".

Sami Abu Zuhri, a Gaza Hamas leader, said in a statement that "the worldwide community is standing in front of a real test to prevent the US administration from violating the global laws".

The verdicts drew condemnation from Human Rights Watch.

While the law requires that the PA president - now Mahmoud Abbas, who is based in the West Bank - ratify all death sentences before they be carried out, according to human rights organisation B'Tselem, at least 97 people have been sentenced to death and 33 have been executed in the Gaza Strip since 2007.

It was not clear when the executions of those in custody would take place.

This morning, the organization's security apparatus said that according to the indictment filed against the woman, Amal's nephew, "Adham", had asked her to help him leave Gaza and move to the West Bank, prompting the 55 year old to connect him to one of the Israeli intelligence agencies in order to guarantee him a safe passage.

During the 2014 war with Israel, a firing squad from Hamas's armed wing killed six men accused of collaborating with the Jewish state. Hamas says the defendants were implicated in previous incidents.
