United Nations chief Guterres calls for more action to tackle climate change

The UN climate summit comes at a crucial juncture in mankind's response to planetary warming.

Guterres pleaded with countries to reduce their emissions from 2010 by 45 per cent by 2030 and to set a goal to release a net zero emissions by 2050, recalling consequences laid out in the 700-page report written by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

"The UN provides a unique platform that can unite the whole world and as the Paris agreement proved, we can make real change happen", Mr Attenborough said. The funding represents double the amount allocated in the original five-year investment plan that was put in place after the 2015 Paris agreement.

"The impacts of climate change are increasingly hard to ignore", said the statement, a copy of which was obtained by AFP.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that we need to act now to combat rising temperatures.

Ramero Anthony, a green activist from Mozambique, said: "It is amusing that we are holding the summit in Poland, whose involvement in carbon economy is so high due to its dependency on coal".

"We are approaching unsafe climate thresholds, species are disappearing at an unseen rate, lands are degrading at an accelerated pace and global carbon dioxide emissions increased in 2017 after a three-year period of stabilization".

Guterres called for a "huge increase in ambitions" during the negotiations in Poland, adding "we can not afford to fail in Katowice". "Climate action offers a compelling path to transform our world for the better".

Decisions on crunch issues, which may include financial aid for poor countries, are expected to be left to ministers when they gather at the domed conference venue in the southern Polish city of Katowice next week.

For 1.5C, they must increase fivefold.

We need them to toss the half-hearted statements away, we don't actually need Ottawa's sympathy, we need Ottawa's full attention. Sohi had last week asked the National Energy Board about ways to make Canada's pipeline system more efficient.

The vast majority of the scientific community agrees that climate change is happening, though notable holdouts-including President Donald Trump-have frustrated global efforts to address the crisis and squandered precious time and resources that could have been used to limit carbon emissions.

He also told delegates, "America is more than just Washington or one leader".

But many other countries are already dealing with the droughts, higher seas and catastrophic storms climate change is exacerbating right now.

"These guidelines need to push countries to immediately cut emissions to achieve the 1.5°C temperature goal and to deal with growing climate impacts".

Translated into climate action, researchers conclude that nations must raise their ambition by 3 times to meet the 2 degrees Celsius and 5 times to meet 1.5 degrees Celsius.

There would also roundtables on key issues such as: Finance and Climate action; SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production) and climate; SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth) and climate; resilience and climate action.

"This is the challenge on which this generation's leaders will be judged, " Guterres said.
