Nats sign P Corbin to 6-year deal

Given Corbin and his family's connection to the Yankees growing up near Syracuse, New York there's not really much for the organization to pitch to him to convince him to sign with the team. Going by those now well-recited comments, fans could expect the Phillies could keep pursuing Corbin as well as free agents like Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, in addition to possibly more players.

- A person familiar with the deal says All-Star pitcher Patrick Corbin has agreed to a six-year contract with the Washington Nationals, pending a physical exam. Nightengale tweeted that Corbin will get at least a six-year, $125 million contract according to several executives.

Happ last pitched for the Yankees, getting sent to The Bronx ahead of the trade deadline from the Toronto Blue Jays.

Philadelphia might be willing to give Corbin his biggest offer since the team is seemingly ready to outspend everyone this winter.

Like Stephen Strasburg, Corbin had Tommy John surgery earlier in his career, missing the entire 2014 season. There has been speculation that Corbin will sign with the Yankees for less money to play for the team he grew up rooting for.

Corbin, who has played his entire major league career for the Arizona Diamondbacks, joins a rotation in Washington that already includes three-time Cy Young Award victor Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg.

Before Corbin met with the Yankees last Thursday the only other two teams he reportedly met with were the Nats and the Phillies.

Patrick Corbin, 29, was incredible a year ago in his second full season back from Tommy John surgery (3.15 ERA over 200.0 innings, with a stellar 2.47 FIP), and he's going to be paid very handsomely in free agency for it (plus his relative youth).

Washington could be the favorites to win the NL East next year if they sign Corbin. He went 2-1 with two holds and a 1.61 ERA over 22.1 innings in the playoffs. He was an All-Star with a 3.41 ERA in 208.1 innings in 2013.
