Jitsukawa, 42, was arrested October 28, 50 minutes before he was scheduled to take off at 7 p.m. local time (2 p.m. EST) from the airport on an aircraft with several passengers onboard.

He was arrested after being found to have about 10 times Britain's legal limit for alcohol in his system.

Breath and blood tests by police confirmed that the alcohol levels in his system exceeded the legal limit by about 10 times and nine times, respectively.

Jitsukawa had previously pleaded guilty to exceeding the alcohol limit and on Thursday was handed a prison sentence at Isleworth Crown Court.

The flight then took off after a 69 minute delay. Their safety was put at risk by your inebriation and drunkenness.

Jailing him for 10 months, Judge Philip Matthews said: "The prospect of you taking control of that aircraft is too appalling to contemplate. The potential effect for those onboard if you did so was catastrophic", he added". He was stopped by airport security staff member after he smelt strongly of alcohol and had "glazed eyes".

One officer said the co-pilot had "difficulty standing straight".

"As an organisation we are going to work together to prevent this happening again", he said.

Police were called to the gate when security staff noticed Jitsukawa smelled of alcohol.

"He (the security manager) went back on the plane to find the defendant in the toilet rinsing and gargling his mouth with mouthwash", the prosecutor said.

The flight was operated by a Boeing 777 aircraft which has a capacity for up to 244 passengers.

Bill Emlyn Jones, mitigating, said Jitsukawa had become depressed.

The pilot feels an "abject disgrace" and wishes to apologise to the airline, passengers and his family "for the shame he had brought upon them", the lawyer added. He appeared in court via video-link from Wandsworth Prison in south London.

According to Japan Airlines, Jitsukawa has said he drank two bottles of wine and more than 1.8 liters of beer over six hours from 6 p.m. the night before his flight.

Earlier this month Japan Airlines said it would introduce a new breathalyser system at airports overseas.
