All-New Nissan Leaf Nismo RC Electric Race Car Is Scintillating

"The all-new Leaf Nismo RC shows how we're setting our sights even higher when it comes to raw power and performance - making electric vehicles even more exciting for customers", said the company's Daniele Schillaci.

"It's our most thrilling expression yet of the philosophy of Nissan Intelligent Mobility".

Set to debut at the Fuji International Speedway alongside Nissan's Formula E racer as part of the annual Nismo Festival, the Leaf Nismo RC uses the same high-capacity lithium-ion battery and inverters as the regular Leaf.

Two electric motors now power all four wheels and deliver a combined 240 kilowatts of power (roughly equivalent to 320 horsepower) and 640 nm of torque. The lithium-ion battery - sourced from the actual Leaf, as have the inverters - is placed low in the middle of the auto for the best weight balance. The power-to-weight ratio results in an impressive performance of zero to 100 kph in just 3.4 seconds-50% quicker than the previous model. Once again called the Leaf Nismo RC, the latest concept, unveiled in Japan on Friday, packs more than double the power and torque of its predecessor.

Nissan Leaf Nismo RC Rear

The Leaf Nismo RC features three-piece bodywork with removable front and rear sections, as well as an adjustable rear wing.

Nissan will build six examples of the Leaf Nismo RC to be used in various demonstrations around the globe.

A follow up to the Leaf Nismo RC of 2011, which also borrowed tech from the normal Leaf, this new one is a graphic illustration of how far EV tech has come in the last seven years.

This is more than double the maximum power and torque of the previous generation auto which debuted in 2011. The distinctive silver-and-black paint scheme with NISMO red accents-similar to the Nissan Formula E car-make the LEAF NISMO RC seem like it's in constant motion, even when sitting still at the starting line. It now sits at just 1,212 mm from the roof to the road. Sitting at the front and rear of the vehicle are a pair of 120 kW (161 hp) electric motors, which combine to churn out a total output of 240 kW (322 hp) and a titanic 640 Nm of torque.
