Georginio Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay strike as Netherlands beat France 2-0

Netherlands players celebrate scoring 2-0 during the worldwide friendly soccer match between The Netherlands and France at De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Friday, Nov. 16, 2018.

Holland - who missed out on World Cup qualification - head to Germany on Monday knowing a draw or a win would see them leapfrog France and seal their place in the last four of the Nations League finals next June.

Netherlands were only denied an even bigger win by a strong performance from France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

A resurgent Netherlands side defeated the current world champions 2-0 at the Stadion Feyenoord to condemn Jogi Loew's side to League B of the competition, being five points behind with just a game remaining.

Netherlands missed out on qualification for the tournament in Russian Federation, having also failed to make it to Euro 2016.

Former Southampton and Everton boss Koeman said: "This was a complete match at the very highest level".

"I want to congratulate this Dutch team", France coach Didier Deschamps said.

"I was surprised by the France line-up and the way they played, but our match was flawless. They had a lot of quality". But led by midfielder De Jong and center back Virgil van Dijk, the Dutch not only dominated possession, but also shut down the World Cup star.

Les Bleus must now hope Germany - who were relegated to League B by Friday's result - beat Holland in Gelsenkirchen on Monday.

Wijnaldum broke the deadlock just a minute before halftime with his 10th global goal in his 52nd appearance for the Netherlands.

Lloris made a host of top saves to stop a thrashing - but Memphis Depay's dinked penalty in injury time made sure of the win.

"I did not expect that we would be the better team for ninety minutes", he told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

France were without injured Manchester United duo Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial at De Kuip.

But even all those absences can not be an excuse for a lackluster display by the world champion. We played well from the beginning to the end.

Depay said that the young team were on the right track.

France had not lost to Holland since a 4-1 defeat in the group stages of Euro 2008.

France can lock up the group with a draw after already getting a draw and a victory against Germany in the two matches those two faced each other.
