Charles Howell III has the first round lead at the RSM Classic

Charles Howell III fired an eight-under 64 to grab a two-shot lead at the RSM Classic on Thursday.

Sharing second on 66, two off the pace, were two players who picked up where they left off in last year's final round, defending champion Austin Cook and 2017 runner-up JJ Spaun. Tournament host Davis Love III had two bogeys and still managed a 67 at Plantation.

The Seaside course, where the final two rounds are held, is more exposed to the wind.

Brian Harman and Peter Uihlein, the only players in the top 10 who opened on the Seaside Course, both totaled 68 and are in a big tie for seventh with Jason Gore of Valencia and Pepperdine, Whee Kim of South Korea, Patton Kizzire, Brendan Todd, Ted Potter Jr., Sunjae Im of South Korea and Champ, from Sacramento.

The 39-year-old has won only twice in more than 500 starts on the PGA Tour, but has accumulated more than $35 million in earnings.
