Two Major Fires Burning in Ventura County

The Hill Fire had consumed 10,000 acres, or 15 square miles, according to Cal Fire, though the Ventura County Fire Department reported no injuries or structure losses at a Thursday night press conference.

A series of fast-moving wildfires is racing Friday up and down California, destroying thousands of structures and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate through flame-lined streets.

About 75,000 homes have been evacuated and, according to the Weather Channel, the entire town of Paradise has been destroyed, which could displace about 27,000 people. It has burned about 6,100 acres as of Friday morning.

Highway 101 is now open in both directions in Ventura County, but is closed farther south in Los Angeles County due to the Woolsey Fire burning near the border between the two counties.

The city tweeted that the evacuation affects areas between the Ventura county line and Malibu Canyon.

The fire broke out Thursday northwest of Los Angeles and roared southward, jumping the USA 101 freeway early Friday and sweeping into the Santa Monica Mountains. She and her husband eventually were able to drive away safely.

Just 12 minutes after the Hill Fire started Thursday afternoon, the flames spread across the 101 Freeway, leaving several drivers temporarily stranded.

Residents posted on social media to share their views of the flames almost consuming the hillside in the Newbury Park area of western Thousand Oaks.

Dettorre is concerned that as the fire crosses the freeway "it will make its historic and typical run all the way down Pacific Coast Highway".
